Hike up a valley to clear water & the old post town of Daigahara

Let’s begin the day with a hike up the Ojiragawa River Valley or the Ishiutorogawa River Valley known for the famous Shojigataki Waterfall and enjoy the refreshing sound of flowing water and being surrounded by greenery. Tea or lunch awaits you at the dry river bed. After the hike is a visit to a well-known local sake brewery Yamanashi Meijo and a traditional Japanese sweets shop Kinseiken, where you can learn and experience how to cook Japanese sweets by yourself.

Ojiragawa River Valley (Hakushu town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

Ojiragawa River is a beautiful stream with clear, emerald green water, flowing from Mt. Kai Komagatake in the Minami Alps. It has been selected as one of the best 100 waters of Japan. You can enjoy the beauty of the valley looking at the Sengafuchi Pond or Jinjyadaki Waterfall whose water flows down in three stairs.

 

Kai Komagatake Shrine (Hakushu town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

Kai Komagatake Shrine at the bottom of Mt. Kai Komagatake is dedicated to mountain worship. One of the best 100 waters of Japan, Ojiragawa River, flows along the side of the shrine and the sacred zone has a solemn yet refreshing atmosphere, surrounded by nature.

 

Ishiutoro River Valley (Takekawa town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

The promenade along Ishiutorogawa River Valley, popular throughout the year, lets you enjoy both the fresh green leaves of spring and the red leaves of autumn. The origin of this river is Mt. Jizodake, one of the Houou-Sanzan Mountains.

 

Shojigataki Waterfall (Takekawa town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

The head of Shojigataki Waterfall is 121m at the highest point, which is the largest in East Japan. A 40 minute walk from the car park along the promenade of the river valley takes you to this waterfall. Selected as one of the best 100 waterfalls of Japan.

 

Daigahara Juku Old Post Town (Hakushu town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

Daigahara Juku was once a flourishing Post Town on the Koshu Kaido Road during the Edo period. Old houses and storehouses still stand alongside then atmospheric sake brewery and Japanese sweets shop. Selected as one of the best 100 roads of Japan.

 

Sake "Shichiken" brewed by Yamanashi Meiji (Hakushu town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

This brewery, Yamanashi Meijo, brews Japanese sake using good water from the Ojiragawa River and the best locally grown rice. Its method has been passed down for 300 years. A restaurant is attached next door, serving meals using local ingredients.

 

Japanese sweet "Shingen Mochi" cooked at Kinseiken (Hakushu town, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture)

Kinseiken is an old Japanese sweets shop that has been in operation since 1903. It is known for a sweet named Shingen Mochi. The building of their flagship shop in Daigahara is a renovated old, atmospheric inn where you can enjoy a sweet-making workshop.
