The Tale of the Western Sea ~ Visit the histories that have been brought about where cultures meet by the sea ~

This is where the two stories meet: the primitive nature existing far before human beings were born and the ancient story of the maritime people who started living on land. This tour also introduces you to a unique way of living of people by the sea in the west of Japan, where people, materials, skills and faiths have been exchanged with the world for centuries.

SASEBO Port Town Walk

A town walk to feel the sea wind from Sasebo Port opened by the Navy of Japan in the late 19th century. A guided tour takes you to the top of a slope to see the town below you, to a park by a river, to the backstreet of an arcade, where new encounters and discoveries await.

Emukae Town Walk

Emukae Town has a history as a post town for journeys to and from Hirado. The mansion where the feudal lord of Hirado stayed during his regular trips to Edo and its furniture still remain today as it was and is now open to the public.

Mikawachi Ware - 7 Chinese Children

The techniques of Mikawachi ware has been passed down through the generations for 400 years from the Hirado clan kiln. One of the characteristics of Mikawachi ware is the technique of using a light blue dye (called gosu) on the white porcelain to apply a delicate illustration. One of the most well known patterns are the karako pictures of Chinese children. The number of children depicted in the picture depended on the use of the piece, such as gifts for the feudal lord or as offerings. To this day there are still kilns in the Mikawachi pottery area where this traditional craftmenship is carried on.

Ojika Island

Ojika Island is a small island in the northern part of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The whole island is part of the Saikai National Park and boasts magnificent natural scenery and beautiful coastlines.
