~A traditional craft going back 400 years to the Edo Period ~ Experience making gold-inlaid Niigata laquerware

The trade ships that sailed the Sea of Japan coast and called at Niigata brought with them a wealth of goods which helped the port cities flourish. They also brought a variety of laquerware techniques from different places, and laquerware from Niigata developed a distinctive style. Laquerware in Niigata started at the start of the Edo Period about 400 years ago, and by the end of that period Niigata had become one of the leading laquerware producers with its products being shipped to Edo and Osaka, and eventually as far as Hokkaido. This is a tour to learn about making Niigata laquerware. You can experience the tradtional technique where the pattern is carved into the piece and then infilled with gold powder by the craftsman.
